Art, Anime, and AI: an Open Letter from Liz at Waifu Monthly

As the owner of an anime company that’s been producing a variety of anime art and manga for many years, I’m incredibly passionate about creating and celebrating anime art. I firmly believe AI is simply the next generation of tools for artists. Just like colored pencils or digital software, AI itself doesn’t make the creator, instead the creativity, vision, and skill of the artist do. When Photoshop and digital art emerged, some feared they’d replace traditional artists, and artists using traditional mediums at the time responded in much the same way some are responding to AI art now. In reality, these tools opened up new possibilities, allowing artists to express their ideas in innovative ways. AI is no different; it’s a medium that enables creative people to bring their ideas to life in ways perhaps we’ve never imagined. At Waifu Monthly, I see AI as a partner in the creative process, yet another tool that helps us craft unique, playful waifu art that our fans love. Embracing these tools allows us to honor the spirit of anime by exploring what’s possible in art, not limiting it.

I’d also like to address a common misconception about AI art: that it somehow creates itself, requiring no artist or visionary. However, creating with AI isn’t nearly as simple as pressing a button but requires skill, inspiration, and an understanding of how to guide the tool to achieve the desired results. Just like traditional art forms, working with AI takes practice, experimentation, and a unique perspective. The artist must know how to shape the tool’s output, refine it, and blend their own creativity into the final piece. AI doesn’t replace the artistic process; it’s simply another method – a skill that must be developed, just like any other. Whether using a paintbrush, stylus, or algorithm, it takes dedication to craft something meaningful. AI is just one of many mediums, and when used thoughtfully, it allows artists to explore new avenues while staying true to their creative vision.

My team and I are passionate about blending the best of both worlds, combining traditional digital art techniques with the capabilities of AI to create something truly unique. We’ve developed a custom-trained AI model that reflects our vision and artistic style which was a process that took collaboration, time, and skill across our team of artists, developers, and myself. We’ve worked hard to build a tool that assists us in bringing out the personality and charm of every waifu we create. Our process involves more than just AI; just like any artistic process, it’s a fusion of traditional artistry and advanced technology, a method that allows us to explore new dimensions of anime art while staying true to the heart and soul of what we love.

Just as cameras didn’t replace painters and Photoshop didn’t replace drawing, AI won’t replace artists because it can’t: AI isn’t a creative force; it’s a tool to convey a vision.

Personally, I choose not to discriminate against artists for the choice of tools they use, and I hope the artistic community will follow my lead in allowing every artist the creative freedom to utilize whatever tool they so choose.

Thank you for your shared appreciation of waifu art.
